Innovation creates sustainable growth
Research, development and innovation are fundamental drivers of the forest industry's perpetual renewal. For consumers and other industrial sectors, innovations in the forest industry manifest as improved or entirely new products and services. In addition, new process innovations aim to make the production of goods and services more efficient.

Competitiveness and new business

The forest industry invests more than EUR 300 million every year in research, development and innovation activities. Through their RDI activities, companies seek competitiveness, increased value added and improved productivity. Finnish forest companies are world leaders in the development of innovations based on renewable material technology. This is reflected in their new business areas: renewable textiles, fossil-free packaging, urban construction solutions, bio-based fuels and various green chemicals to name a few.

In a world struggling to cope with climate change, the forest industry’s wood-based, renewable and carbon-storing products play a decisive role. Even today, forest industry products absorb more carbon dioxide than the sector's mills in Finland release.
